Found your blog because you, apparently, stopped by mine yesterday (Smoky Talks…), How fabulous to find a blogger who writes about the wild places in Cook County and beyond! Even though I live in Southern California, I spent the first 50 years of my life in Illinois, and know the Cook County forest preserves well; the DuPage County forest preserves even better. Your blog takes me home again. I look forward to reading more.
thanks again, Smoky…so happy to have you here! I’ve been in Illinois five years and have really just begun to explore the forest preserves deeply. Please share if you remember any places I should visit.
One forest preserve I highly recommend is in DuPage County: Waterfall Glen. It’s just beautiful, and there is a herd of white deer there. (Not native, of course, which is a problem, but lovely, nonetheless). It’s off Interstate 55. Herick’s Lake in DuPage is a favorite of mine too, as I remember ice skating on the lake as a tiny child. I’ll have to pull out a map and look to get other names for you; I remember the parks but not the names! (Middle aged moment!) It’s been 16 years since I lived in the Chicago area (I lived in Champaign 12 years before moving to California), but I have so many fond memories of picnics and hikes in the forest preserves. I’m so glad you’re blogging about them.
I am familiar with Waterfall Glen, though I have not been there. Now I that much more impetus to get out there. thanks!
Let me know if you see the white deer! Don’t know if you’re in to cross country skiing, but Waterfall Glen does a terrific job of keeping trails groomed. Or at least, they did 20 years ago!
will do!
